This position is full time for qualified CA(SA) or CFA candidates, with 5 years’ experience in helping grow the SME’s space in an existing portfolio and who are enthusiastic, hardworking and good team players. The company hiring, is involved in the small businesses funding, management, due diligence and valuations.
Monitor, manage and grow investees. In the short-term, manage and grow a portfolio of high growth, early stage venture investments for a social venture capital fund. In the longer term, help in building Africa’s leading Gazelles incubation firm.
The type of person we require would need to be able to: a. Be an A-Player, with a clear track-record of performance in previous roles b. Understands the SME context; entrepreneur and business challenges that SME’s need to overcome in growing. Ideally developed this understanding in an investment context c. Has the background and experience to immediately be capable of adding value to MD’s of portfolio companies, diagnose any short-comings and propose solutions d. Have the ability and attitude to assist in building the capability of the PIM function/model whilst executing on the work at hand e. Ideally had training in SME financing and worked in an SME financing institution in the role of screening funding applications, conducting due diligences and/or helping SME’s grow post-investment f. A proven ability to support in our deal making (screening, DD’s and taking decisions to IC) function will be advantageous The first 12-18 months: g. The cornerstone of our PIM model revolves around the following SME facing rhythms: i. Adhoc engagements with MD’s portfolio companies (this is more client relationship management) ii. Monthly check-ins with MD’s (typically also used track initiatives from board sessions) iii. Quarterly advisory board sessions (more strategic discussions with an additional advisor in the session) Apart from continually adding value to the entrepreneur and the business, the purpose of these rhythms is to monitor our investments, diagnose any issues within the SME’s and propose solutions to the issues h. Intermittently supporting in and be exposed to the other general operations of the Fund which include: i. Client (sponsor) engagements, mainly to report on how the portfolio SMEs are doing ii. Deal Making (process of finding and investing in the right SME’s) iii. Capital raising iv. Various BU rhythms i. We are a very small team delivering on a very big mandate; so expect to be very busy, working hard, needing to be independent and leveraging your manager’s time effectively
