South Africa has made great strides towards gender equality in the workplace since 1994. This Women’s Month, we chatted to Melody Hlongs, Senior Human Resource Specialist at Compass Insure, about her first-hand experience of diversity and gender equality in the workplace.
Can you share a pivotal moment in your career where you felt your contributions significantly impacted your community or organisation?
One of the most impactful initiatives I’ve been involved in is addressing the high unemployment rate among South African youth by offering practical experience to students through the undergraduate vacation program. This program provides students with hands-on experience, allowing them to learn alongside a professional and passionate team in a highly skilled and responsive environment. This exposure not only deepens their knowledge of the sector but also equips them with the skills necessary to thrive in the industry.
Additionally, we’ve extended our commitment to inclusivity by offering learnerships to students living with disabilities. This initiative allows them to earn a certificate in short-term insurance, supporting their dreams and career aspirations. Through this, we aim to show them that they are employable and capable of securing a bright future.
What challenges have you faced as a woman in business, and how have you overcome this?
Breaking into leadership roles as a woman can be challenging. Despite being qualified, I often felt that opportunities for advancement were limited. To overcome this, I actively sought out mentors who could advocate for my abilities and potential. I also made it a point to continuously upskill and stay ahead of industry trends, and I am grateful to be part of a company that believes in equality.
“These women have not only paved the way for me but have also instilled in me the importance of lifting others as I climb.“
Who has been your greatest inspiration or mentor in your career, and how have they influenced your professional journey?
I am fortunate to have been inspired and mentored by a number of strong, leading women throughout my career, from my learnership days to the present. These women have not only paved the way for me but have also instilled in me the importance of lifting others as I climb. Their guidance and example have been instrumental in shaping my professional journey.
What advice would you give to young women aspiring to enter the field of accounting and finance in today’s professional landscape?
Never stop learning: Continuous education and self-improvement are vital in this ever-evolving field.
Empower others: As you climb the ladder, keep it down for other women to follow. It’s essential to foster a culture of support and mentorship.
Maintain strong work ethics and authenticity: Always uphold high standards in your work and stay true to your authentic self. Integrity and authenticity are the cornerstones of lasting success.
