Specialist IT and tech recruitment agency for data engineers, architects, and technology leaders.
Blue Recruiting is a specialist IT and technology recruitment agency in South Africa, placing hard-to-find professionals across the full data and technology spectrum: from data analytics and engineering to cybersecurity and software development. Whether you need permanent staff, contract specialists, or remote international hires, we find the right technical fit quickly.
Why this market is hard to hire in.
Demand for data and technology talent in South Africa has grown faster than supply for three consecutive years. The gap between what businesses need and what the market can provide is widening: 79% of South African businesses report difficulty hiring tech talent, especially in cloud, cybersecurity, and data. Most IT recruitment agencies in South Africa rely on job boards and keyword matching. Finding the right professional requires a technology recruitment agency whose consultants understand the role at a technical level, not just the job title.

What to settle before you hire a data or technology professional.
A job title rarely tells you enough to set a useful salary range or identify the right person. Start with the problem the hire must solve, then define the environment, seniority and commercial terms before the role goes to market.
Start with the business problem
Decide whether the role will build a new data platform, maintain existing pipelines, support reporting, lead a cloud migration or solve another defined problem. Each brief calls for a different profile and budget.
Name the technical environment
List the cloud platform and tools the person will use, such as Azure, AWS, GCP, Databricks, Snowflake, dbt or Fabric. Include the languages, data architecture and systems they will inherit or build.
Set the level of ownership
A first data hire in a business with no established platform needs someone who can design, make decisions and own the foundations. A mid-level engineer may be the right choice for a mature team with technical leadership already in place.
Agree the commercial terms
Confirm the cost-to-company salary band, working model, reporting line, notice-period expectations and any employment equity considerations before you approach the market. Clarify whether medical aid, retirement contributions and bonuses are included in or paid separately from the stated package.
Data engineer or consultancy?
A permanent hire usually makes sense when data is an ongoing operational need: pipelines must be maintained, the platform will keep growing and the business needs to retain its knowledge. A consultancy is often better for a defined project with a clear endpoint, such as an initial platform build, cloud migration or specialist work you will not need again.
Many employers use both. A consultancy builds the platform, then a permanent hire takes ownership before the project ends. This gives the business a proper handover and protects its internal capability.
Assess the work the person will actually do
Employers commonly use a short, time-limited pipeline, SQL or data-modelling exercise, an online coding assessment, a portfolio or GitHub review, or a structured technical screen with a senior engineer.
Keep the assessment proportionate. Strong candidates are often in several processes, and long unpaid assignments early in the process can cause them to withdraw. Blue Recruiting screens candidates against the technical brief before submission, so your interview time goes towards a qualified shortlist.
What to expect from the South African market
Salaries are generally quoted on a cost-to-company basis. Johannesburg and Cape Town tend to command the highest packages, while financial services and fintech often pay above other sectors for comparable roles. Cloud data engineering, Databricks, Snowflake and machine-learning engineering skills can attract a premium.
Offshore employers recruiting remotely in dollars, pounds or euros have raised expectations for senior candidates. Counter-offers are common, and senior professionals may have two- or three-month notice periods. Review our data and technology salary guide for current role ranges.
Hiring from South Africa internationally
International employers can hire through their own South African entity, use an Employer of Record, or engage an independent contractor. Employers without a local entity often use an EOR to manage local payroll, PAYE, UIF and compliance. The contractor route has its own classification and compliance risks.
South African professionals work in English, and SAST overlaps with the UK and Europe for most of the working day. Employers still need to account for South African employment law, notice periods, leave entitlements and POPIA when handling personal information.

How we approach Data & Technology searches.
Technical brief
We understand the stack, the team structure, the data maturity of the business, and what the role needs to achieve. We ask technical questions that clarify the real requirements.
Targeted search
We identify candidates through our technical network, GitHub, LinkedIn, and direct referrals from professionals we have placed. We do not rely on job boards for senior technical roles.
Technical screening
We screen candidates against the technical requirements before presenting them. We verify experience, assess depth of knowledge, and identify red flags early.
Managed process
We manage the full process from interview scheduling to offer. For senior technical roles, we advise on market rates, equity structures, and counter-offer management.
What makes our Data & Technology practice different.
Technical consultants for technical roles
Our data and technology consultants understand the roles they fill. They can have a meaningful conversation with a data architect about their work, which means they assess candidates more accurately and present fewer mismatches.
A network built over years
We have been placing data and technology professionals in South Africa since before the market became competitive. Our network includes professionals who are not visible on job boards.
Flexible hiring models
Whether you need permanent staff, contract specialists, or remote international hires, we tailor our approach to your needs. We help you build the talent solution that fits your business.
The specialist behind this practice.
Lucy-Skye Hammond
Interim Head of Data & Technology Recruitment
Lucy-Skye Hammond established Blue Recruiting's Data and Technology desk and now serves as its interim Head, placing data engineers, architects, analysts, and technology leaders across South Africa and into international markets.
She understands the difference between a data engineer who can build pipelines and one who can architect a platform. That technical fluency helps her assess candidates against the real requirements of a role rather than relying on job titles alone.
Lucy-Skye works with high-growth businesses, financial services firms, and technology companies to build data and engineering teams that are technically strong and aligned with the way each business operates.
Building a data engineering team for a high-growth fintech.
South African Fintech Β· Series B Β· Data Engineering Β· 3 hires in 6 weeks
Challenge
A fast-growing South African fintech needed to build a data engineering function from scratch. The business had reached a scale where ad hoc analytics were no longer sufficient, and the founding team lacked the time and network to run a rigorous technical hiring process. They needed a recruiter who could assess candidates at a technical level, not just match job titles.
Approach
We took a detailed technical brief from the CTO, mapped the specific stack requirements, and conducted a targeted search across our data engineering network. Every candidate was assessed against the technical requirements before being presented. We ran the full process, from initial outreach to offer management, allowing the CTO to focus on the business.
Result
We placed three data engineers within six weeks, including a Senior Data Engineer who became the team lead. All three candidates were still in role twelve months after placement.
We also recruit in these areas.
